Laurence asked:

I always thought Polly would live for ages, so always seemed so full of life and never had any medical problems except for some eye and ear infections which were sorted out pretty easily. Then last Thursday my mum took Polly for a walk over the hills, she collapsed twice before she even got there so they went home. From then on she just sat in her bed, wet herself and wouldn’t eat, just constantly drinking and then throwing it up sometimes. This went on until Sunday until she ate some bacon and stuff for breakfast, then it continued again. When I got home from school on Monday I managed to get her to eat loads, all of her previous dinner, loads of bowls of milk, snacks etc… After this I thought she was okay, but then it started all over again so my Mum took her back to the vets on Wednesday where they said they would do some more tests and keep her in overnight. On Thursday morning before I left for school the vets rang my mum, I thought they were going to say we could take her home until I walked out into the kitchen and saw my mum in tears talking to my dad on the phone, then I realised what was happening. The vet had said her bone marrow had stopped producing red blood cells or something and her count was 9 when normal was 25+ or something, he said the best thing for her would be to put her to sleep as the treatment was very expensive and as she was nearly 11 (and for a boxer that’s just above average) she might not pull through. And so yesterday at about 12:45 in the afternoon, a week after all this started, my mum, dad and I went down to the vets to say goodbye to Polly. As she saw us she wagged her tail and seemed so happy, she got up after we had been petting and shook herself as if she was ready to go home with us. The vet said they are all like this even when they are really ill when they haven’t seen you in ages, it just seems like she wasn’t ready to go. We sat her down on a mat and all pet her and cuddle her as the vet injected her, she didn’t struggle at all and her head just slowly fell to her paw.

I just feel like there was so much we could have done, and it seemed like such a quick decision, she had only showed signs of being badly ill for about a week.

What do you think, should we have tried harder to keep her going?
Was the vet hasty in his decision as well?

I just feel so sad and guilty, I know it’s only been a day but I feel like I’m never going to stop crying.
She was an 11 year old boxer, she did have a great life but I just can’t seem to take any comfort in that.

Mary Martin asked:

My 10 year old son wets the bed. We tried all the cures–nasal spray, etc. but the doc says time is the only foolproof cure and that most kids stop before puberty. Anyway, my question is about going green. He’s been wearing Goodnites, the pullups for bedwetters, but we’re going green so I want him to wear cloth diapers and plastic pants. He’s reluctant. It takes more to pin them on, whereas the Goodnites he just slipped on and off. If he wakes up in the middle of the night and hasn’t wet, going to the toilet is tough because he has to unpin the diaper and then repin it when he’s done. and all this in a groggy state. Also they’re a lot thicker than Goodnites, so it makes him waddle. But we only have one planet and we have to protect it! I know it’s hard for him to think about the global ramifications; he’s worried about things closer to home. So how can I get him to see how going green is an important thing that personally effects each and every one of us?

Mar.R asked:

My husband has Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. He’s constantly upset or in a panic and I don’t think I can cope with it anymore. He’s getting help from both a psychiatrist and a psychologist and he’s on medication for anxiety. He still needs constant support and reassurance in everything he does, or he has a panic attack. He’s had several psychogenic seizures, which scare the crap out of all of us, and that he’s still getting treatment for.
He can’t sleep for more than two hours without waking up, and he has nightmares that are so bad he wets the bed. Two weeks ago he wet the bed four times in one night, and by the fourth time when he was up screaming and crying while I was trying to help him get changed, I lost my temper with him and started yelling. Then I went down stairs to sleep on the couch. I know it was an awful thing to do, but when he has panic attacks its like he has the emotional stability of a three year old. His thoughts are clouded, and when I came back to our room the next morning to see if he was okay, he was still sitting against the wall where I left him looking terrified.
Has anyone else cared for someone with PT SD? How do I cope with him, and what can I say to make him understand I’m not angry with him? Any other comment? I need HELP!
No, he’s not a soldier. I won’t go in to detail, because it makes me sick to think about it -but he was raised in foster care and the family that took him in did some terrible things. It was over 20 years ago, but he’s just begun suffering because of it recently.
Do people really think he needs to be committed? I think he should be at home with his family. If he moves into a hospital ward can I stay with him?

A bed wetting alarm is one of the safest and most effective treatments for curing bed wetting, also known as enuresis. These devices cost between $50-$100 depending on the model and features you choose. While they work for a large portion of people using them, there are things that you can do to help improve their success rate.

The first thing you need to know is how they work. When you buy bed wetting alarm, you are getting two main pieces. The first is the sensor. This is placed on the pajamas with clips. The other part is the alarm, which is secured on or near the shoulder. It’s attached to the sensor and goes off when urine is detected. It uses sound and sometimes light and vibration.

Many bed wetters sleep deeply during the night. They may not wake up due to the alarm, but the body will be startled enough to stop the flow of urine. This alone is not enough to cure enuresis. It is vital that the child goes to the bathroom when the bed wetting alarm goes off. Since they may not be able to wake themselves, you’ll need to be able to hear it going off as well. Get up, wake them, and escort them to the bathroom.

For this to be an effective treatment, you’ll also need consistency. You’ll need to do this every night, for at least a few weeks. Fortunately you should see some results fairly soon. Your child will likely stop sleeping through the noise after a week or so, though you may want to still get up at night to make sure.

Should you buy one of these devices for your family? It does take time and effort, but it has good results. Another positive is that there are rarely setbacks that occur after using them properly. If you’ve been to the doctor and ruled out a physical cause of your child’s bed wetting, try using bed wetting alarms as long as you’ll take the time to use them properly.

By: Carrie Tyler

About the Author:

Some kids are having a hard time coping up with wetting issues they face everyday, more so if their parents are too busy to stay and talk, little as they are, they have issues too. To get them to pour out what they have been trying to hide can be quite a hard task. Try to stop nighttime bed wetting as soon as you can. This problem may be accompanied with daytime wetting or some bowel problems. Bed wetting occurs because some children do not get up and go to the bathroom whenever they feel their bladder is full.

Genes may have something to do with this too. You do not have much control over releasing urine randomly in bed or in a vehicle. It happens unconsciously, and you are ****** just before you know it. As a parent, to know that your child is already having these issues is a serious matter. Kids who wet their beds happen to have a slightly different neurological problem of sending messages for bladder control to the brain while sleeping.

Bed wetting is also genetically inherited by the children and could possibly be passed on to the next generation. It may be caused by stress or over excitement. Some people think that bed wetting indicates that the child may be suffering from certain kidney malfunctions, although, some children do, but most of them do not.

Using drugs really is not the best answer at all. Drugs may cause side effects such as drying of the mouth and ****** flushing. This alarm helps the child in feeling that their bladder is full. Explain to your children that it might be a little embarrassing if they are still experiencing bed wetting in their teens.

Parents may feel frustrated and sometimes ill tempered every morning when they find out they have to change sheets again. With consistency and determination you can overcome the bed wetting problem. Hang in there and do not give up. Teach your child to feel comfortable during bedtime. Help them to feel relaxed and at ease.

There may also be bowel difficulties that need immediate attention. You should always seek the advice of your doctor for all medical issues. Parents should also become conscious that their children are not to be blamed. This is the best element of any treatment plan. Do not worry to much about nighttime bed wetting as it will get solved eventually. Bed wetting in a lot of cases just becomes less frequent and eventually goes away as the child gets older and develops more personal control.

By: Bryon Zirker

About the Author:

heather asked:

I have been dating my boyfriend for over a year now. My boyfriend has been divorced for over a year now…the relationship was long ended before I came into the picture, but they were living together until the ex wife could get her affairs in order to leave. I’ve spent time with my boyfriend’s son and things have been pretty good, until recently. The child is extremely disrespectful (to anyone, not just me), defiant, and down right unruly. He has nightmares, (occasionally) issues with wetting the bed (at times, he still wears a ‘pull up diaper), violent outbursts (kicking pets and kicking people), and is very ‘mouthy’. He recently has decided to not want to play a sport that he used to love last year. He is 6 & 1/2 yrs old….he is also an only child. He lives with the ex wife in a small cramped apt filled with clutter and disorganization. My boyfriend is living in a house, that is ‘clutter free’. The child was seeing a ’social worker’ but is no longer in treatment (due to insurance issues on the social workers part). My boyfriend is actively looking for a psychologist for his son to go to. In the meantime, what role can I play in this part? The child is comfortable speaking to me about things, but at times like I said earlier can be extremely rude and defiant towards me. I am doing my best to be there for my boyfriend during this tough time with his child. I think I’m just more concerned/confused about things….is all of this just ‘normal’ 6yr old behaviour, or is this due to the divorce and the changes going on in his life? This child is also surrounded by older people that really aren’t choice people for him to be around…..no ambitions, no jobs, not exactly good role models. The child also doesn’t have many friends his own age, and has learned at a very young age that he ‘wants to take the easy road…sit around and get catered to’. My boyfriend is also very upset that his child has to go see a doctor, but I think that it’s good to get this taken care of now, at such a young age as opposed to waiting until he is a teenager. Is anyone else going thru this?? HELP!
@ michael: I can tell you that my boyfriend is quite stable (for the most part, but then again who really is stable all of the time?), but the ex wife is NOT! she is a woman in her mid 30’s who thinks she is in her early 20’s. I’m just curious if the child’s actions are due to his age and being a boy? or is it due to the divorce over a year ago? As far as i know, the ex & my boyfriend ‘get along’, but i’ve never met her or spoken to her, only go by what he tells me of her. I just want to make sure my boyfriend’s child is going to be ok, and again, how I can help everyone?

I am worried we may have to do this all over again and am wondering if a relapse is normal. Please advise!!

Bridget asked: My 11 year old sister still wets her bed.She tells me that she can’t feel anything. My mom and I are very worried about her. Aside from going to the doctor or using an alarm clock,is there a pill that can cure it?

Brittany asked:

Before we sleep at night we let our puppy outside to *** then we put him in his cage for the night. We’ve been working on potty training him for about a month now, so far so good for a basset hound. He barks at us to let us know he needs to go out now and we’ve gotten it down to maybe one pee-pee mishap in the house. We’re even at the point of not using the training pads anymore. However overnight he will wet his bedding. His last meal is at 6pm and his bedtime is 8pm with one more outside trip before my boyfriend and I go to bed yet 5am my boyfriend will let him out and we’ll find he has wet the bed. He did have a UTI two weeks ago we used meds to from our vet to cure that because he did *** every 15-20 minutes without water. Any ideas on how to teach our little puppy how not to wet his bed overnight?
